Meet Cillian Madden – Physiotherapist at Star Physio West Perth & Mosman Park

Star Physio is excited to welcome Cillian Madden to our physiotherapy team. He will be working across both our West Perth and Mosman Park clinics.

Cillian is an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist. He enjoys helping people with pain, injuries and movement problems, whether they have developed through sport or everyday life.

With a background in Sports Science and Health, Strength & Conditioning and Physiotherapy, Cillian takes an active, practical approach to treatment. He combines thorough assessment and hands-on physiotherapy with exercise and progressive rehabilitation. This helps patients reduce pain, restore function and get back to the activities that are important to them.

Alongside general musculoskeletal physiotherapy, Cillian has particular interests in running and cycling injuries, endurance sport, volleyball and lacrosse.

A Background in Sports Science, Strength & Conditioning and Physiotherapy

Originally from Ireland, Cillian completed a BSc in Sports Science and Health at Dublin City University before completing his MSc in Physiotherapy at University College Cork.

His sports science background provides a strong foundation in exercise prescription, training demands and athletic performance. These skills integrate naturally with his work as a physiotherapist.

Cillian has completed Level 1 and Level 2 Sports Physiotherapy courses. This further develops his knowledge and skills in sports injury assessment, rehabilitation and return to sport.

His own sporting background includes competitive hurling in Ireland, while running and cycling have become major personal interests.

Physiotherapy for Pain & Musculoskeletal Injuries

While Cillian has a strong interest in sport, his clinical expertise involves the same problems we see every day at Star Physio. He helps people manage pain and musculoskeletal injuries and to back to moving well.

Cillian treats a broad range of conditions affecting the muscles, joints and tendons, including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Shoulder pain and injuries
  • Knee pain
  • Hip and groin pain
  • Ankle and foot injuries
  • Muscle strains and joint sprains
  • Tendon pain and overuse injuries
  • Work and lifestyle-related musculoskeletal problems
  • Rehabilitation following injury or surgery
  • Persistent or recurring pain and injuries

Cillian’s approach starts with understanding why someone is experiencing pain and what is preventing them from doing what they want to do.

Treatment is individualised and may include hands-on physiotherapy, advice and education. This is combined with exercise rehabilitation, strength and conditioning and a progressive return to normal activity.

Whether the goal is getting through a day at work without pain, returning to the gym, walking comfortably, getting back on the bike or competing in sport, the principles are the same! Understand the problem, address the contributing factors and build the capacity to get back to doing more.

Running, Cycling & Endurance Sport Injuries

Cillian has a particular interest in working with runners, cyclists and endurance athletes.

Endurance sport injuries aren’t always as simple as identifying the painful structure. Training load, strength, biomechanics, recovery, previous injury and equipment can all contribute to why an injury develops or persists.

Cillian works with athletes to identify the factors relevant to their individual injury and develop a rehabilitation plan that allows them to progressively return to training and competition.

He can assist with presentations including:

  • Running-related knee pain
  • Achilles and other tendon problems
  • Calf and hamstring injuries
  • Hip and gluteal pain
  • Foot and ankle injuries
  • Cycling-related knee pain
  • Neck and back pain associated with cycling
  • Overuse and training-load related injuries
  • Strength and conditioning for return to running and cycling

At Star Physio, Cillian also works alongside clinicians with expertise in sports physiotherapy, running assessment, sports podiatry, cycling injury management and physiotherapist-led Bikefit, allowing us to take a multidisciplinary approach when required.

Working with Volleyball Athletes – From WA Teams to the National Development Camp

Cillian is involved in Star Physio’s long-standing work with Volleyball WA and Australian volleyball.

In the lead-up to the Australian Youth Volleyball Championships, Star Physio worked with the WA teams for three months, providing screening, injury management and preparation to help athletes arrive at the tournament ready to perform.

During the Championships, Cillian joined Damian Oldmeadow, Amy Ross and Aaron Tay as part of the Star Physio team providing 180 hours of physiotherapy coverage across three Perth venues.

Following the tournament, Cillian, Amy and Damian were also the physiotherapists for the three-day Volleyball Australia National Development Camp, working with elite junior volleyball players from across Australia.

Cillian understands the particular demands of volleyball – including repeated jumping and landing, rapid changes of direction and the significant shoulder loads involved in serving and spiking.

Cillian can assist volleyball players with assessment, rehabilitation and return to sport following knee, ankle, shoulder, back and other musculoskeletal injuries, as well as progressive strength and conditioning to prepare athletes for the demands of training and competition.

Lacrosse Injury Management

Cillian also brings valuable experience in a sport that is less commonly represented among Perth physiotherapists – lacrosse.

Through his work with Subiaco Lacrosse Club, Cillian has treated and supported lacrosse athletes, including players who have represented at national level.

Lacrosse combines running speed and endurance with acceleration, cutting, contact and the repeated upper-body demands of passing and shooting. Cillian’s experience with the sport, combined with his background in sports science and strength and conditioning, gives him a strong understanding of the physical demands involved in rehabilitation and returning a lacrosse player to competition.

For Perth lacrosse players looking for a physiotherapist who understands their sport, Cillian is available at both Star Physio locations.

Rehabilitation That Goes Beyond Settling the Pain

Cillian’s approach fits closely with the way we work at Star Physio – treatment is only one part of recovering from an injury.

Where appropriate, rehabilitation progresses from managing symptoms and restoring movement through to strength, conditioning and sport-specific loading.

Both Star Physio clinics have dedicated rehabilitation facilities, allowing Cillian to take patients from the treatment room into progressive gym-based rehabilitation and ultimately back to running, cycling, court or field sport.

And you don’t need to be an elite athlete. Cillian works with recreational athletes and active people of all levels, with rehabilitation tailored to the individual’s injury, activity and goals.

Book with Cillian at West Perth or Mosman Park

Cillian is available for physiotherapy appointments at both Star Physio West Perth and Star Physio Mosman Park.

He treats a broad range of pain and musculoskeletal conditions, from back, neck, shoulder and knee problems through to muscle, joint and tendon injuries.

Cillian also has particular experience and interests in running, cycling, volleyball, lacrosse and endurance sport, with his background in sports science and strength and conditioning providing a strong foundation for rehabilitation and return to activity.

Whether your goal is simply to move without pain, get back to work and exercise, or return to competitive sport, Cillian can assess the problem and develop a treatment and rehabilitation plan around what you want to achieve.
