Types of Massage

Depending on your requirements, a number of different massage techniques and types may be used to improve your function or help you relax.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is designed to prevent and relieve injuries and conditions that are associated with exercise. It can be carried out before, during, or after playing sport or exercising and uses techniques that are designed to increase endurance and performance, to minimize the chances of injury and, if there is an injury, to reduce the recovery time.

Deep Tissue Massage

Massage treatment

Soft tissue treatment

A deep tissue massage is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres. It is often used in sports massages as it accesses the deeper muscle fibres which are often fatigued from overexertion.

Deep tissue massage can be used to help break up and eliminate scar tissue which may have developed from previous injuries. Our therapists help ease tension which builds up in the muscles as a result of activity, massaging out toxins and soothing aches and pains. Sports specific massage uses deep tissue techniques designed for individual needs and can focus on specific muscle groups.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy involves the use a deeper and more localised method to release trigger point in the body. Trigger points are hypersensitive areas in muscles, tendons or connective tissue that usually are tender to a client. Trigger point therapy is especially good for people who tent to overwork their muscles causing repetitive strain injuries. Athletes, musician and some workers are prone to developing trigger points as the body will shorten muscles that are over extended to prevent reoccurrence.

Swedish/Relaxation massage

Swedish massage can be used to help increase the oxygen in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It can also assist with shortening the recovery time needed from muscular strains, stretching out of muscle fibres and ligaments and tendons. Swedish massage helps to reduce the effects of emotional and physical stress and is suggested as part of a regular program for stress management.

Stretching

During a treatment session, numerous stretching techniques may be employed including:

Static stretches to alleviate an area assessed as excessively tight.

PNF stretches (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) to decrease the tone in a muscle or muscle group that is assessed as being too ‘tight’.

Dynamic stretches to alleviate symptoms of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), the soreness felt one to two days after excessive, new or eccentric exercise

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is now a common technique used by a number of therapies. The Osteopaths designed the technique some 100 years ago but like many techniques these days, it is used by many therapies. MET is the use of light contractions by the client in very specific directions to alter joint restriction and range by altering the resting length of local musculature

Massage therapy may be beneficial for:-

  • Back & neck pain
  • Sporting injuries
  • Knee and Shoulder Joint Pain
  • Headaches
  • Recovery and Performance
  • Flexibility and stiffness
  • Motor vehicle accident rehabilitation
  • Work injuries
